Education Settings Self-Assessment  Tool (Section 175) & Guidance

It is vital to ensure that Birmingham schools and colleges can demonstrate that they are meeting key statutory duties and following safeguarding children and young people guidance. All settings are being asked to complete the audit on-line, enabling them to provide information to the Birmingham Safeguarding Children Partnership on how they discharge their duties and help to keep children and young people in Birmingham safe.

Section 175 of the 2002 Education Act requires local education authorities and the governing bodies of maintained schools and FE colleges to make arrangements to ensure that their functions are carried out with a view to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. Section 157 of the 2002 Education Act and the Independent School Regulations 2003 convey the same responsibilities on all other non-maintained settings.

Section 175 Audit 2021/22
The responsibility for the Education Safeguarding self-assessment tool (section 175) has moved across to the local authority and the tool for 2021/22 was released on the 17th March 2022.

The Section 175 tool will again give schools an opportunity to update their previous responses. There are some additional questions around child on child abuse and the tool has been adapted slightly to ensure all settings including 16 plus can respond. The link to access the tool is:

The 2021/22 audit is due in on Friday 15th July 2022.

We will notify schools by email when the 2021/22 tool has been enabled. This will provide education settings with the opportunity to begin populating the data as and when it becomes available. However, please note that Question 9 cannot be completed until closer to the date of submission as the data required for this question is captured from September 2021 to June/July 2022. Consequently, education settings must NOT click on the submit button until all data has been included.
