Safer Sleeping

According to the Lullaby Trust, approximately 189 babies die from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) in the UK every year, with 91% of those cases occurring within the first six months of life. There are numerous factors which can increase the risk of SIDS, one of them is unsafe sleeping practices.

Birmingham Safeguarding Children Partnership, Birmingham City Council, NHS trusts and charities, including the Lullaby Trust and Action for Children, are among organisations informing parents and carers of the simple steps they can take to reduce the risks of SIDS and the potential dangers of ‘overlaying’ – suffocating babies and infant children when they sleep in the same bed as an adult.

Launched in 2016, the Safer Sleeping campaign was designed to promote the importance of safer sleep and the steps parents and carers can take to reduce risks.
