Never, Ever Shake a Baby: Helping parents cope with crying
Last year, we launched the ‘Never, Ever Shake a Baby’ campaign in partnership with NHS Birmingham and Solihull and Birmingham Community Healthcare Trust, in response to concerns surrounding shaken baby cases in Birmingham. Shaken baby cases are relatively rare, but they can have devastating consequences, including death. Survivors of shaken baby syndrome may suffer from long-term disabilities, including cognitive impairments, developmental delays, vision problems, and motor skill deficits.
Studies suggest that babies crying persistently may trigger some parents or caregivers to shake them, and approximately 70% of babies who are shaken are shaken by men. Hence, the campaign is primarily aimed at male parents and carers, and urges them to never, ever shake a baby, regardless of how overwhelmed or stressed they might feel. The campaign has been endorsed by the Birmingham Children’s Trust, West Midlands Police, Birmingham City Council, HM Prison and Probation Service, and ICON. It has also been adopted by a wide range of safeguarding organisations and partnerships across the Midlands.
ICON is a programme adopted by health and social care organisations in the UK to provide information about infant crying, including how to cope, support parents/carers, and reduce stress.
This week (25th-29th September) is the third annual ICON Week, which is focussing on sharing ideas and best practices. Many webinars are taking place throughout the week and are open to everyone. For more information and joining instructions, please visit www.iconcope.org/iconweek2023
