Safer Sleep Week 2025
10 – 16 March was Safer Sleep Week; The Lullaby Trust’s national annual awareness campaign targeting anyone looking after a young baby. It aims to raise awareness of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and the simple advice that reduces the risk of it occurring.
In the UK, approximately three babies die every week from SIDS, tragedies that could potentially be prevented if all parents and caregivers were aware of safer sleep guidelines. A recent survey conducted by the Lullaby Trust revealed concerning statistics, showing that over two-thirds of parents allow their babies to sleep in items not designed for sleep. Alarmingly, more than 8% of these parents leave their babies in unsafe sleep environments overnight. This highlights a crucial gap in knowledge that Safer Sleep Week aims to address.
Safer Sleep Week 2025 specifically focused on how babies should sleep, along with guidance for when parents or caregivers should seek expert advice. The campaign underscored the importance of creating safe sleep environments and being aware of the warning signs when a sleep arrangement may not be safe for a baby. This year’s theme encouraged parents and caregivers to better understand the potential risks and empowered them to make informed choices that protect their baby’s health and well-being.
To help spread safe sleep advice, the Lullaby Trust has made a wealth of resources available on their website. These resources include leaflets, posters, and videos designed to support both parents and professionals in promoting safer sleep practices.
You can access the resources from Safer Sleep Week on the Lullaby Trust website. NHS Birmingham and Solihull have also created a 7-minute briefing for practitioners on Co-Sleeping and Safer Sleep for Babies.
